The Fourth of July, one of the greatest celebrations of the year, is almost here. A day to commemorate our independence and to appreciate our freedom, it’s a holiday steeped in tradition and significance for millions of Americans.

For many, it’s a day known for quality time with family and friends, community parades and events and breathtaking fireworks displays.

However, amidst all the festivities, you often need a little extra cooling to stay comfortable on the 4th, especially if it’s a sunny and clear day. With that in mind, here are some HVAC tips to help you and your family stay cool without overworking your HVAC unit this Fourth of July.

Hydration is Important

One simple but important way to stay cool even on the hottest days of summer is to ensure that you and your family stay well hydrated.

You might not think about this as a way to take the pressure off of your HVAC unit, but it can be a surprisingly effective way to do so. When you stay hydrated, especially by drinking cold water, you help to lower your body temperature.

The result is that you stay cooler without having to turn down your thermostat. So amidst the many things you do to help your home to be more efficient and keep cool without the use of your HVAC unit, don’t overlook this easy and healthy tip.

Avoid Straining Air Filters

If you’re hosting a barbecue this July 4th, you can probably envision the doors being regularly left open while smoke from the grill wafts inside. As you might imagine, this can put a strain on your air filter.

Plus, even without additional strain, midway through the year it’s not uncommon for air filters to have been overlooked and in need of replacement. Periodically replacing air filters helps your HVAC unit to run more smoothly and efficiently while also improving the air quality in your home.

As a result, replacing air filters is an easy way to help your family stay cool and comfortable. You should replace your air filters at least every 90 days; however, if you have pets or family members with allergies or respiratory issues, you’ll want to replace your filters every 45 to 60 days.

Schedule Preventative Maintenance

Can you imagine having a house full of friends and family on a beautifully hot and sunny Fourth of July only to have your air conditioning go out?

While it’d certainly be a Fourth of July that you’d remember, it’s probably not the kind of memories that you’re hoping to create for you or your guests.
