Spring is coming soon! Crocuses will start to pop up, daffodils will bloom, and your lawn will be lush and green. Temperatures will start to creep up as well, so before that happens, you should make sure that your HVAC system is ready for the changing seasons. Some basic maintenance will ensure that your suburban Chicago home’s HVAC system will function properly through the spring and summer.

Change Your Filters

Air filters capture debris particles that can decrease energy efficiency and damage your HVAC system. That’s why it’s important to check your filters regularly and change them when they’re full of dust and debris. It’s an easy task, but extremely important to remember so that your A/C functions properly and at maximum efficiency. It’s a good idea to set reminders on your calendar so that you remember to do it.

Adjust Your Thermostat

When you switch to cooling mode, it’s a good idea to program your thermostat to your new desired temperatures. Set it at the temperature that’s comfortable for you when you’re at home, and a different temperature for the times when you’re away or sleeping. You might also want to consider getting a smart thermostat so that you can control temperatures from your phone even when you’re not at home.

Clean Your Outdoor Unit

During the fall and winter, your outdoor AC unit takes some abuse. Leaves and other debris in or around the unit should be cleared so that when warmer temperatures hit, you don’t have any issues with your cooling system.

Clean Vents and Ducts

Dust and debris can collect in your ducts and vents which restricts airflow and has a substantial negative impact on your HVAC system’s efficiency.  You can clean your vents by vacuuming debris from the vent covers or washing them with soap and water. Also, make sure all your vents are open. Closing certain vents does not save energy because it creates unbalanced air flow.

Cleaning ducts is a more involved process. You need a high-powered vacuum to remove dust and a brush to scrape away debris, which makes duct cleaning a job that’s generally best to leave to professional HVAC technicians. TR Miller Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing can handle the job for you so that your ducts are as clear as possible when it’s time to cool down your house.

Check Your Pipe Insulation

Check the insulation on your coolant lines to make sure it hasn’t been damaged by the weather or animals. Insulation is important to get maximum efficiency from your A/C.

Get an HVAC Tune Up

The best way to ensure that your HVAC system is ready for warm temperatures is to have your system professionally inspected, cleaned, and serviced. You should do so before summer and again before winter to make sure both your heating and cooling are working properly.

An inspection, cleaning, and servicing will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • A filter check
  • Air flow adjustments
  • Leak check
  • Cleaning and adjustments of all components
  • Drain inspections
  • Lubrication of parts
  • Cycle check
  • Thermostat inspection
  • Wiring test and adjustment
  • Sensor check

Consider a New Air Conditioner

Air conditioners typically last about 20 years, but they eventually wear down and need replacement.  Some signs to watch out for include a frequent need for repairs, higher energy bills, noises or odors, leaks, and weak air flow.

If your A/C is more than 20 years old, you may also want to consider upgrading to a more efficient system. You’ll see a return on your investment over time with reduced energy expenses.

But if your A/C is older but you’re not having issues, you can likely delay its replacement. If you are having issues, though, consider the following:

  • What’s the overall condition of your A/C? If you make the repair, but other repairs may be coming soon, paying for a repair could be a waste of money.
  • How much does the repair cost compared to replacement? If the repair cost is significant, your money may be better spent on a new A/C.
  • How well is your A/C working for you in general? If you haven’t been getting enough cool air, or have had to repair it multiple times, it may be at the end of its life.
  • How long will the repair last? If your technician tells you that the repair is just a band aid and that you may have to repair it again soon, it may be time for replacement.

There are 2 common choices for A/C.

  1. Central Air Conditioner: Central air conditioners are the most common type of cooling system. They use fans and ducts to distribute cool air.
  2. Heat Pump with Ductless Mini-Splits: A heat pump is an all in one heating and cooling solution, which can have small wall units called mini-splits to distribute warm or cool air without ductwork.

Three factors should be considered when choosing an A/C system.

  1. Efficiency – The more efficient the A/C system, the more money you’ll save on energy bills in the long term.
  2. Capacity – Consider your available space for the system, and the capacity of the system to meet your home’s cooling needs.
  3. Price – You’ll want to keep the cost of the system within your budget.
