1. Age
Air conditioners generally last about 10 to 15 years and can last longer if they are well-maintained. However, over time, they start to become less efficient and may need frequent repairs. When this starts to happen, an investment in a new unit is likely worthwhile.
2. Frequent Repairs
If your A/C repair costs start to add up, it may make more sense to replace your unit than to try to keep it running. Similarly, if one large repair is necessary, such as a part replacement, you should consider whether the expense is worth it or if replacement is a better option.
3. High Energy Bills
The telltale sign that your unit is losing efficiency is higher energy bills. If your bills are going up, you should have your unit inspected to determine if maintenance can restore efficiency or if a new unit is a better option.
4. Coolant Leaks
Several signs can indicate that your A/C has a refrigerant leak:
- Lack of cooling, warm air coming from vents
- Hissing sounds
- Frozen coils
- High energy bills
- Increased humidity
- Exhaust odor
It may be possible to fix the source of the leak, but sometimes coolant leaks make replacement the best option.
5. Compressor Failure
The compressor is the heart of your air conditioning system, but it can fail for a variety of reasons including:
- Dirty coils
- Low refrigerant due to a leak
- Blocked refrigerant lines
- Electrical issues
- Damage from debris in the unit
- Inadequate lubrication in the system
- Age
When your compressor fails, you can have it replaced, but it’s costly, so it may make sense to get a new unit.
6. Constant Running
If your A/C is always running and never seems to shut down, this can indicate an efficiency issue. Constant running can also mean the unit is not the correct size for your home.
7. Noisy Unit
If your unit is making unusual sounds, it may have a motor or coil issue, or it may indicate that your A/C is at the end of its life.
8. Uneven Cooling
If certain rooms are warmer or don’t seem to be getting any air flow it could indicate a malfunctioning unit. Unbalanced temperatures could also indicate an improperly sized A/C unit.
9. High Humidity
As your A/C ages and wears down, it may stop dehumidifying your home as well as it should.
10. For the Environment
Newer A/C units use less energy and also use more sustainable types of refrigerant. This makes a new unit a win for both your wallet and the environment.
