Summers in the Chicago suburbs can get hot, forcing homeowners to crank up the A/C. This can lead to energy bills that make you cringe, but by following some simple tips, you can keep those bills under control.

1. Change Your Filter

When your HVAC filters get clogged with dust and debris, your A/C system’s efficiency can be significantly impacted, raising your energy bills and impacting your indoor air quality. Be sure to check your filter monthly and replace it when it’s dirty.

2. Watch Your Temperature

While it may be tempting to keep your thermostat set at a lower temperature, it’s recommended that you keep it at 78 degrees in the daytime during the summer months. When you’re away, keep it set even higher or turn it off completely,

3. Keep the Heat Away from Your Thermostat

If your thermostat is near heat producing appliances, or in an area where it gets sun exposure, it’s going to make your A/C work harder. Consider moving it to a cooler, darker part of your home.

4. Consider a Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat allows you to adjust your temperature from your phone even when you’re not home. That way, you can keep the temp high when you’re at work, and turn it down when you’re on your way home. That way your house is comfortable when you walk in the door.

5. Seal Gaps

To keep out the heat, you need to seal any gaps in your home, such as around windows and doors, and in spaces where pipes enter or exit. Weather stripping and caulking can go a long way toward reducing your energy usage.

6. Insulate

Make sure that you have adequate insulation in your walls and attic. Investing in upgraded insulation can dramatically reduce your energy bills.

7. Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clear

To keep your A/C working at maximum efficiency, keep your outdoor unit free of debris. Check in the spring for leaves and other debris that may have accumulated, and then check it again every month.

8. Use Your Ceiling Fans

Running ceiling fans can keep your air circulating and take the pressure off of your A/C system.

9. Open the Windows at Night

When the nights are cooler, turn off your A/C at bedtime and open the windows. A nice cool breeze can help you sleep well.

10. Keep the Sun Out

Sun coming in through the windows heats up your home more than you may think. Keep your blinds or curtains closed to keep the temperature down.

11. Don’t Use the Oven During the Day

Using your oven puts out a lot of heat, so if you can, don’t use the oven or other heat producing appliances during the daytime.

12. Turn Down Your Water Heater Temperature

Hot showers don’t usually sound appealing during the summer anyway, so turn down your water heater temperature to reduce the energy that it uses.

13. Get Out of the House

Summertime is fun time, so turn off the A/C and head to the pool or to another cool place like a movie theater.

14. Have Your A/C Cleaned and Serviced

Regular maintenance of your A/C system can keep it working properly, reduce your energy costs, and prolong the life of your system. Regular servicing can also detect any underlying problems that may need attention before they get worse.

Professional annual servicing of your system includes:

  • Cleaning components
  • Cleaning or replacing air filters
  • Inspecting all parts and making any necessary adjustments
  • Lubrication of moving parts
  • Thermostat testing
  • Inspection of the wiring

15. Upgrade for Efficiency

If your HVAC system is older, upgrading to a new, energy efficient system is an investment that will pay off over time, saving you money all year round.

Brian Sloan is the President of TR Miller Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical, one of the western Chicago suburbs' leading family owned home service companies, serving homeowners across more than 80 communities throughout Will, Kendall, DuPage, Kane, and Cook counties.

TR Miller is more than a business to Brian, it's a family legacy. The company was founded by his father, Tim Miller, and Brian and his brother Jim have played an important role in growing the business from a small local operation into a full service residential HVAC, plumbing, and electrical company serving homeowners throughout the greater Chicagoland area.

Brian's perspective on the home services industry comes from firsthand experience. Before taking on leadership responsibilities, he worked in the field as an HVAC Service Technician and Fabrication Technician, diagnosing heating and cooling systems, assembling custom HVAC components, and supporting residential installations throughout the western suburbs.

That hands on foundation continues to influence the way Brian leads TR Miller today. He understands both the work taking place inside a customer's home and the systems, training, and support required behind the scenes to consistently deliver a great customer experience.

Over the course of his career at TR Miller, Brian has worked across nearly every major area of the business, including operations, marketing, sales, job coordination, customer service, finance, and leadership. Today, as President, he is responsible for the overall strategy, growth, culture, and performance of the organization.

That breadth of experience across both the technical and business sides of home services has helped shape how TR Miller operates: combining the systems and accountability of a professionally run organization with the care, responsiveness, and personal connection of a family business.
Brian's philosophy is straightforward, make home services convenient and reliable while giving homeowners the information they need to make the best decisions for their homes and families. That means educating customers, providing clear options and upfront pricing, and making sure homeowners understand both what was found and why a repair or replacement may be recommended.

Under Brian's leadership, TR Miller has expanded beyond HVAC into plumbing and electrical services, grown across multiple locations, invested heavily in technical and leadership development, and been recognized seven times on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest growing privately held companies.
