If your furnace is aging out and you’re weighing your replacement options, the gas vs. electric question comes up fast. Both systems heat your home effectively, but they work differently, cost differently to operate, and suit different homes. Here’s what homeowners across the western and southern suburbs of Chicago need to know before making the call. 

 

How Each System Works

A gas furnace burns natural gas to generate heat. A burner ignites the gas, the heat exchanger warms the air, and a blower pushes that warm air through your ductwork. Most modern gas furnaces carry AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) ratings between 80% and 98%, meaning they convert 80 to 98 cents of every dollar of gas into usable heat.

An electric furnace uses resistance heating elements, similar in principle to a toaster, to warm air before distributing it through the same duct system. Electric furnaces are technically 100% efficient at the unit level because all the electricity consumed becomes heat. However, since electricity itself costs more per BTU than natural gas in most of Illinois, the real-world operating cost is typically higher.

 

New Furnace Cost: Upfront vs. Long-Term Operating Cost

When evaluating new furnace cost, it helps to separate the installation price from what you will spend running the system over time. Electric furnaces generally cost less to purchase and install. The units are simpler, there is no gas line or venting required, and installation time is shorter. For a home already set up with electric heat, the changeover is straightforward.

Gas furnaces carry a higher upfront cost, partly because of the equipment itself and partly because proper venting and gas line work adds to the installation. However, natural gas rates in the Chicago suburban area have historically made gas the cheaper fuel to run through a full Illinois heating season. The savings on monthly utility bills tend to offset the higher install cost within a few years for most households.

If your home does not currently have a gas line, adding one is an additional project and expense. That changes the math considerably and is worth factoring in before committing to gas.

 

Performance in Cold Weather

Illinois winters are not mild. Communities across the western and southern suburbs of Chicago regularly see temperatures drop into the single digits, and your furnace needs to keep up without running constantly.

Gas furnaces produce higher-temperature air, typically between 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit at the supply registers, which means the home heats up faster and the system cycles less frequently in extreme cold. Electric furnaces produce slightly cooler supply air and may run longer cycles to reach the same thermostat setpoint when outdoor temperatures are at their lowest.

For most Chicago suburban homeowners, this is a meaningful difference during January and February.

 

Efficiency Ratings and Rebates

High-efficiency gas furnaces (90% AFUE and above) qualify for rebates through Nicor Gas and sometimes through federal tax credit programs, which can reduce the effective install cost noticeably. If you are upgrading from an older 80% AFUE unit, the efficiency gain also translates directly to lower gas bills.

Electric furnaces do not carry AFUE ratings because they operate at 100% conversion efficiency at the unit. However, some utility programs and rebates apply to electric heating equipment upgrades as well. It is worth checking current ComEd incentives at the time of your purchase.

 

When Electric Makes Sense

Electric furnaces are a reasonable choice in a few specific situations. If your home has no existing gas service and the cost of running a gas line is prohibitive, electric heat avoids that project entirely. Electric furnaces also have no combustion byproducts, no heat exchanger to crack, and no carbon monoxide risk, which some homeowners factor into their decision.

Smaller homes or supplemental heating zones can also be reasonable candidates for electric systems where the runtime and operating cost difference is less significant.

 

The Electrical Panel Factor

One detail that catches homeowners off guard: electric furnaces draw a significant amount of power, typically 15 to 25 kilowatts depending on the unit size. Older homes in the western and southern Chicago suburban area may have 100-amp panels that cannot support the added load without an upgrade.

Before committing to an electric furnace installation, have your electrical panel evaluated. If an upgrade is needed, that cost needs to be part of your comparison.
