Every spring, you open up the curtains and windows, letting in the sunlight and fresh air, but then you see the dust. It’s time for spring cleaning.

But, while you’re polishing the wood, washing the comforters, and vacuuming under the sofa, don’t forget about your A/C.  You’ll be using it soon, so you want it to be in tip top shape. To ensure the performance of your A/C, add these to-dos to your spring cleaning list.

1. A/C System Tune-Up

A full system tune-up will address any issues, provide a good spring clean, and get your A/C ready to roll this summer.

2. Replace Filters

Replacing your filters will ensure that your system will run efficiently and improve your indoor air quality.

3. Clear Your Outdoor Unit

Leaves and other debris can accumulate in your outdoor unit over the winter. Clear out any debris that is inside or around your unit.

4. Check the Drain

Most A/C units have a drainage hole at the base of the cabinet.  Make sure this drain is clear to allow proper drainage.

5. Dry Out Your Dehumidifier

If you use a dehumidifier, keep it working with a good cleaning.  Remove the housing and let the unit dry out, then vacuum the surface and the crevices.

6. Inspect the Windows/Doors

Check your windows and doors to see if there are any cracks that need caulking or weather stripping. This will help keep out heat and humidity this summer and save you money on your energy bills.

7. Clean Vents and Ducts

Check your floor vents and cold air return vents for dust and debris. Removing the covers and washing them with a bit of soapy water will get them cleaned up.  Duct cleaning is a little more complicated, so it’s best to call a professional. This will remove dust and any mold and mildew that may have grown. You don’t want the spores to reduce your indoor air quality.
